Every other year, we start a new Harvest of the Month calendar, and 2019 is one of those years. Many people help pick the items to go on the calendar: Whatcom County school food service directors, local farmers, school garden educators, restaurant and grocery store owners who feature the harvest item at their businesses, and the Sustainable Connections Food & Farming Team who design the beautiful calendar and accompanying materials.
There are many criteria we consider when choosing the Harvest items. We want to make sure that each item…
- is likely to be in season locally during the month it is featured.
- can be prepared in school kitchens and served on school salad bars.
- can be served in ways students will be excited to try.
- may be growing in school gardens, or used in classroom cooking lessons.
- has some educational potential, making it interesting to talk about with kids.
The 2019 Harvest of the Month items meet all these criteria and we hope you enjoy eating and learning about them this school year. Try tomatoes to get started!
