Valentine’s Day is a holiday that celebrates love and friendship. Children come home from classroom Valentine’s Day celebrations with bags full of candy hearts, chocolate, and store-bought valentines bearing lollipops. This raises the question, is this really how we want to show love to our children and their friends?
Of course Valentine’s Day is only one day in a year so it’s no big deal, but between birthdays, other holidays, and students’ many accomplishments, there are opportunities for school celebrations all year round. With 20+ students in a class, that can add up to a lot of candy and cupcakes!
Whatcom Farm to School Support Team would like to share a few resources for finding fun and healthy ways to help kids feel special, celebrate their successes, and build community all year round:
- Guidelines for Celebrations & Fundraisers – from the work of the Bellingham Schools Good Food Promise Committee
- Host a Healthy Valentine’s Day Celebration at School – Action for Healthy Kids
